One of my favorite things about diving is that no matter how much you learn, there is always another aspect of it that can be conquered, and the best way to do that is to continue your education. I have always felt that this is especially important for dive instructors.
When someone successfully completes an IDC and IE and becomes a new PADI Instructor, they often feel that is the end of a long journey. You are excited to begin teaching and get your new career started. But I have seen new instructors quickly burn out if all they teach is DSD and Open Water Diver. By teaching only entry level course it quickly becomes like you no longer dive for yourself and some of the joy disappears. A great way to keep the joy and passion in your diving and teaching is to be able to teach a variety of courses; especially ones you are passionate about. When you teach PADI Specialty courses you get the opportunity to work while still teaching in a specific area of diving that sparks your passion. By becoming a PADI Specialty Instructor, the IE is not the end of your journey but the beginning.
Continuing education is also something that experienced instructors should be thinking about as we start the New Year. Con Ed is especially important to experienced instructors as a way to not only keep your interest level high & passion alive, but as a way to advance your career in diving. Why not move into the upper ranks of instructors by becoming an IDC Staff instructor. You get to see IDC’s from the teaching standpoint and more importantly; you get to share your instructional expertise and help shape the next generation of PADI pros. Being a mentor to up and coming instructors is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching for me and it is not only fun, but helps keep your skills super sharp.
So whether you just finished your IE and are wondering what to do next or you have been teaching diving for 10 years; make continuing education your resolution for the New Year and a priority for your career. You won’t be sorry, in fact, you may rediscover some of your original passion for diving and find that you are having more fun than ever at work!
